Wow! We are an actual thing. It's been a long and exciting road, but here I am writing our first blog post...
I am Nicki Kelly, the founder of The VIP Project. I'm a singer-songwriter and producer & i'm severely sight impaired. I started to lose my vision at the tender age of 22 and it turned my world upside, overnight. After some very dark times, I decided to follow my dream of being a songwriter and the dream has evolved into so much more.
The VIP Project is part of the evolution and hopefully the revolution.
In March, I went to a coffee morning for visually impaired people (VIP) and I got chatting to a lady who works with VIP. She said that so many want to pursue music, but there's nothing out there for them. They become so isolated and people as young as 14 end up going through the mental health system.
I left that meeting, went home and spent the afternoon crying and most of the next day. I could not sit back and allow this to keep happening and so The VIP Project was born. After months of planning, asking and applying we were successful in securing a grant from Arts Council England and we are supported by The Royal National Institution for Blind People (RNIB).
We want to give VIP the opportunity to be creative by learning about songwriting and performance from successful singer-songwriters who are working and active in the music industry today. We also want to show the world that a disability does not mean we are incapable. We want to show the world that a disability does not limit a person's ability to create.
We need your help to get this message out to the world.
Over the next few weeks we will be announcing who our wonderful singer-songwriters are and on 16th December we'll be launching our application process.
If you know someone who is visually impaired aged 18-35 in Birmingham & surrounding areas, who would be interested in taking part in this project please tell them about us.
Please like, follow and share The VIP Project on social media. Here are our details:
